Heaven on earth is a state of mind and there was no obvious reason why we wouldn't achieve steady-state-nirvana on this very road trip. But there was some transition work to do first.
Rising up out of the Alice and passing through the gorge country just north of town, like always, mental self-evaluation is our highest priority.
Like deep sea divers eager to return to the surface - but mindful of the need to not rush the decompression, slowly but surely we work through our recent experiences and organise our thoughts.
We pass Aileron and Ti Tree with barely a word said. Somewhere around Kalu Kalu words with meaning emerge.
"I'm shattered" said Alex. "Was that for real?"
My own experience had been difficult but for some reason I was finding my recalibrations easier to manage.
"Yeh, it was a bit bullshit," I offered.
By the time we reach Tennant Creek the seriousness of Alex's recollections had escalated.
"That was one of the worst experiences of my life. Surely what we just witnessed was the worst kind of corruption? What are we gonna do about it?"
"Breathe in, breath out", I said abruptly. I wasn't impressed with Alex's presumption that we had to do anything about it.
