El Niño and La Niña describe recurring oceanic and atmospheric oscillations and related phenomena... and of course of particular interest to inland and northern Australia is the abundance of rain and lush conditions that come with La Niña years. In this article we provide some background to El Niño Southern Oscillation (ENSO), as the leading international framework of our era, contrast with other cultural paradigms and consider the likelihood of a 4th La Niña year.
