Visions of the Top End

El Niño and La Niña describe recurring oceanic and atmospheric oscillations and related phenomena... and of course of particular interest to inland and northern Australia is the abundance of rain and lush conditions that come with La Niña years. In this article we provide some background to El Niño Southern Oscillation (ENSO), as the leading international framework of our era, contrast with other cultural paradigms and consider the likelihood of a 4th La Niña year.

Pastoralism in 2023

Over 100 countries have pastoral land-use systems (or similar) and over 25% of the Earth’s land area is used by pastoralists.

In an Australian context, pastoralism was a key driver of European settlement across the continent and continues to be a key land use across all states and territories. The climatology of Australia's grasslands is based on the three primary grazing regions: the tropical zone (tropical and subtropical grasslands, savannahs and shrublands), the arid centre (deserts and xeric shrublands), and the temperate zone (temperate grasslands, savannahs and shrublands). In a Northern Territory context, the significance of pastoralism as a land-use arrangement is much more prevalent than other parts of the continent. This is partly due to the phased transition that has already occurred in other parts of Australia (e.g. Victoria), but also as a result of other considerations. This essay will explore these other considerations, alongside present and pressing issues.
